ABOUT US
OCEAN GIANTS PROGRAMME
Who can apply?
Second year University of Plymouth (UoP) students who are studying marine sciences or related courses. Applications open at the beginning of the academic year.
What is the OGP?
A one-year programme, designed to equip participating students (Apprentices) with useful skills and experience in several aspects of the real workings of a marine charity. Apprentices spend their year learning from conservation professionals at the Manta Trust, whilst building a relationship with their Partner NGO, the Maldives Manta Conservation Programme (MMCP). After completing their training, the Apprentices will use their new knowledge and skills to raise funds and visibility for the MMCP. The Apprentices will also have the opportunity to apply for a placement with the MMCP upon completion of their degree qualification.
Programme Overview
Alongside their second UoP year studies, Apprentices get access to specialist training with Manta Trust staff, in vital elements of charity management and operations such as fundraising, media and communications and project management.
Over the year, Apprentices get to know their NGO Partner, the Maldives Manta Conservation Programme (MMCP), through online research, video calls and by taking on remote tasks set by their Partner.
Following training in fundraising, Apprentices will be expected to work together to raise as many donations as they can for their Partner NGO over the year. The Manta Trust will match the funds raised for the MMCP by the end of June (with a cap at £1000 per Apprentice) in grant funding for any Apprentices who secure a placement with the MMCP.
